The Time Traveler's Wife

Okay, now I read this book about 2 years ago during my time off when I was working at a library. I first picked it up because I liked the title, I didn't put it down because it was one of the most enthralling novels I've ever read and truly the most advanced form of romantic fiction I've yet to see. Now that the movie is getting ready to be released (August 14th!!) I figured I would take the chance to share with the world just how wonderful I found this book to be.

Okay so the title says alot about this one, the book is in fact about the wife of a man who is able to travel through time. What the title fails to tell you though is that through his time travel ability Henry is able to meet his wife at various stages of her life from a six year-old Clare to a twenty-six year-old Clare. Can you imagine the magic and wonder that could exist if you had the chance to watch your one true love grow up to be the love of your life and your wife? Well Audrey Niffenegger shows how truly powerful love can be between this dynamic pair. She also shows how hard it can be to deal with the unexpected as Henry time travels away from his wife and Clare is left alone and waiting. This book shows the strength of the bond of love and the magic that comes from being in love. If I haven't convinced you already just give in and read the book, it will be well worth your time and it may grow to be one of your favorites just as I found it to be one of mine.

I hope you have a great start to your July and Happy Reading!! :)

The Sugar Queen

So according to my sources, of which I have many, blogging is awesome and highly addictive so I figured why not give it a try, couldn't hurt right?

So because of my job, and my general love of books in the first place, I think this will probably become my source of ranting and raving about what books I've read or any awesome ones I'm currently reading. I have a great love of fiction based in the South and classics, particularly Shakespeare. My boyfriend is one of the few people who is able to hold my attention longer than any piece of work by my man, Willy Shakes. Yes, Shakespeare and I are close enough for me to be able to call him by a nickname and colloquial last name.

Now that I've horrified the literature fiends of the world by calling Shakespeare by a funky nickname, let me get down to business and tell you about my latest read. I just finished "The Sugar Queen", by Sarah Addison Allen and it was superb. I was a little hesitant in starting to read the book because I loved her previous work, "Garden Spells", so much but her sophomore release doesn't dissappoint. Her work has been described as "Southern-fried magical realism", and I could not agree more. I've spent many years in the South and Allen's use of language and Southern proverbs make it feel like going home. It's impossible to read without wanting to curl up in your closet with some sweet treats like main character Josey. The dynamic between Josey and her mother shows just how easy it is to get stuck in the trap of forever seeking the approval of someone for past wrongs, even when the wrong doing is long forgotten. The supporting characters are full of wit and brilliance and their role in Josey's life helps her to grow and finally become a woman rather than remaining trapped under her mother's thumb. This book made me laugh, cry, and reminded me of the importance of knowing who you are and breaking free of the idea society has of you based on your past. People are ever-changing, who we are today could be vastly different from who we are to become and "The Sugar Queen", shows that with grace and ease. I can't wait for Sarah Addison Allen's next work due out in 2010. Find out more about the author and her works at her website, http://www.sarahaddisonallen.com/index.html

That about sums it up for now, may your weekend be awesome, and Happy Reading! :)
